Hello, House (Reviewed by Jeanne Shannon)

Hello, House (poetry book)

Hello, HouseHello, House is a book of praise for the author’s small, sturdy, sun-yellow house, and for the satisfaction, even joy, she experiences in caring for it and doing the necessary household tasks. Things singled out for recognition include the play of sunlight on spoons and glasses, the beauty of  ‘dishes swimming in shimmers’ of dishwater, and the ‘tangible sunshine’ in the fragrance of line-dried clothes. Not forgotten are the trees–walnut, mahogany, and others–that live on in her furniture and floors. Maxine Hong Kingston’s drawings capture perfectly the spirit of the house and its owner.”

–Jeanne Shannon, author of Angelus and Stars Like Scattered Like Seeds
